Don’t Hang onto Grudges

“Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.” – Oprah Winfrey

There is a story about two monks who were travelling together. They came across a young woman on the bank of a river. She was wearing a beautiful sari and was reluctant to get it wet.

The elder monk said, “Let me carry you across the river”.
On the other side, the woman graciously thanked them, bade them farewell and went on her way. The two monks continued on their journey for more than half a day when the young monk who had been pondering over this incident turned to the older monk and said:

“I thought we monks were supposed to avoid women. Why did you carry that woman across the river?” The wise old monk replied. “I put her down long ago. Are you still carrying her?” Do you carry around grudges, hang onto hurt feelings, mull over embarrassing moments and long for the past?

Your life is too unpredictable and fleeting to get bogged down in regrets and hurt feelings. Let go of the past and become one with the flow of life, whether this is in churning waters when your world feels turbulent or the quiet stillness of a pool when your world feels at peace.

Look at your life with new eyes and wonder at the beauty of the world. It was Danny Kaye who said, “Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can”. I once read that a man labelled an envelope “Waste of Time” and he would put negative and unhelpful thoughts into it and file them away. When he was away from his office, he would mentally file away thoughts that were not serving his purpose into this envelope. This freed him to get on with his life.
