Fill Your Life with Laughter

“The marvellous African laughter born somewhere in the gut, seizing the whole body with good-humoured philosophy.” – Doris Lessing

One of my earliest memories of being around the people who worked on our farm was their laughter.

One day in the late autumn, a hare leapt out of the long thatch grass growing in the contour alongside the turnip field. This happened to be right near the feet of one of the workers who were helping to harvest turnips to feed the dairy cows. He leapt up into the air with fright. Everyone laughed and the laughter went on all day, as the story was told and retold.

Laughter is life’s greatest gift.

As Charlie Chaplin said, “a day without laughter is a day wasted”. Did you knowthat laughter is used as a formof therapy for healing? Studies by Dr Madan Kataria of India, the founder of Laughter Yoga, and Dr Michael Miller, a
leading US heart researcher, show in their research that hearty laughter can significantly improve cardiovascular
health, reduce stress and increase work effectiveness.

Norman Cousins in his book Anatomy of an Illness writes: “I made the joyous discovery that ten minutes of genuine belly laughter had an anesthetic effect and would give me at least two hours of pain-free sleep”. Laughter and massive doses of Vitamin C eventually helped cure his debilitating illness. Do not allow laughter to slip from your life with the pressure of our modern way of living. Even to smile at another will lighten your day. After all, a laugh is but a smile that bubbles over. Give away your smiles freely and in abundance.

South Africa is so lively in its diversity and so rich in humour that you can tap into it and rediscover
your playful side. Rediscover the child in you. Carry your smiles and laughter around with you, then spread them, they’re contagious.
